WASHINGTON, D.C. — Oct. 15, 2018 — BakerHostetler announced today the expansion of the firm’s advertising, marketing and digital media team with the arrival of partners Randal M. Shaheen and Amy Ralph Mudge in the firm’s Washington, D.C. office. Mudge will now co-lead the team with New York-based partner and current leader, Linda Goldstein. Mudge and Shaheen were previously partners at Venable LLP, where Mudge co-chaired the advertising, marketing and new media practice group.

Mudge, a Chambers USA (Band 1) nationally ranked advertising and regulatory lawyer, has significant experience representing clients before the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), National Advertising Division (NAD), Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU) and state attorneys general. She also has successfully handled numerous antitrust and class action cases. With more than two decades of experience, Mudge represents some of the most recognized national brands across a broad spectrum of industries including digital media, fintech, food, retail, consumer products, toys, video games and health and wellness. She also counsels clients on all aspects of their advertising and marketing campaigns, with a particular focus on social media, including native advertising and influencer marketing.

With more than 30 years of experience, Shaheen has handled numerous high profile FTC and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) investigations, NAD actions, Lanham Act false advertising cases and multijurisdictional litigation. He also has advised clients in all areas of advertising, marketing and consumer protection. He has worked on a variety of matters concerning privacy and data security, “green” claims, health and performance claims, dietary supplements and weight loss, “Made in USA,” marketing to children, claims interpretation, comparative claims and survey use.

“Amy’s vision, talent and leadership are extraordinary. Amy and Randy are widely admired for their extensive knowledge and insight. They are incredibly adept at advising clients on highly sophisticated and evolving advertising and marketing issues, and at representing clients in high stakes legal, regulatory and competitive challenges. The depth and breadth of experience that Amy and Randy bring give us an enhanced ability to service our clients in the ever broadening range of advertising, marketing and data privacy-related issues,” remarked Linda Goldstein, leader of BakerHostetler’s advertising, marketing and digital media team. “On a personal level, I have admired Amy’s ascendancy in our bar over the years, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to lead this team with her at BakerHostetler.”

“I am delighted to welcome Amy and Randy to BakerHostetler,” said Jeffrey H. Paravano, BakerHostetler’s Washington, D.C. office managing partner. “Their understanding of the regulatory environment in D.C., and their knowledge and experiences with legal issues relating to marketing and advertising, will add strength to our team as they continue to advise clients facing complex challenges in this quickly changing area.”

“Linda is an icon in the field, and I’m delighted to co-lead the team alongside a woman whose trail blazing career I greatly admire and respect,” said Mudge. “The size and scope of BakerHostetler’s multidimensional privacy and data protection practice – which includes cybersecurity, blockchain and emerging technologies that will drive the growth of digital media – is a natural fit for where I wanted to next take my practice. In addition, the firm’s geographic presence in key markets across the country, will allow us to serve our nationally diverse clients in their home courts.”

Mudge earned her B.A. from Smith College and her J.D., cum laude, from Cornell Law School, where she served as the Book Review Editor for the Cornell Law Review.

Shaheen received his B.A. from Bucknell University and his J.D., magna cum laude, from Harvard Law School, where he served as the Notes Chair for the Harvard Law Review.
