Press Releases / January 14, 2019

Washington, D.C.— Jan. 14, 2019 — BakerHostetler announced today the addition of Teresa M. Goody to its Washington, D.C. office, where she will continue her broad-based securities and corporate law practice that includes defending SEC investigations and assisting clients with securities litigation, as well as serving as general securities and corporate counsel. She joins from the firm The Goody Group PLLC, where she was founder and CEO.

Prior to starting her own firm, Goody was an attorney in the Office of General Counsel at the SEC, a managing director at Kalorama Partners and personal counsel to former SEC Chair Harvey Pitt. She also has been selected by the SEC as one of eight current “Fair Fund” administrators. The Fair Fund process was established by Congress as part of the Sarbanes-Oxley legislation as a mechanism to help compensate investors harmed by securities law violations.

Teresa’s broad practice reflects years of experience with securities laws, corporate governance, anti-corruption and fraud examinations, corporate transactions and regulatory compliance and disclosure. Teresa’s experience also includes issues associated with blockchain technology and defense of cryptocurrency SEC investigations. As a recognized authority on corporate governance and regulatory compliance affairs, Teresa regularly writes and lectures on securities law issues and has appeared as a guest on CNBC, Fox Business Channel and Bloomberg. Teresa also serves as an expert witness on corporate governance and fiduciary duty issues, and lectures at Georgetown’s McDonough School of Business.

“BakerHostetler’s securities law practice is an excellent landing place to continue to build my practice,” Goody said. “I look forward to working with other team members at the firm to serve our clients as part of BakerHostetler’s already deep bench.”

Goody earned a J.D. from Georgetown University Law, an M.B.A. from Georgetown University McDonough School of Business, and a B.S. in Business Administration from George Mason University. She also is a Certified Fraud Examiner.

“Teresa is a well-respected securities lawyer,” said W. Ray Whitman, chair of the firm’s national Litigation Group. “She is a strong addition to our nationally ranked White Collar, Investigations and Securities Enforcement and Litigation team, which is home for the majority of our firm’s 50 lawyers who, like Teresa, formerly served at federal and/or state agencies and have insight and relationships that most firms cannot match.”

“We’re thrilled to bring Teresa’s broad experience both in government and private practice to our national securities team,” said Jeffrey Paravano, managing partner of BakerHostetler’s Washington, DC office. “Teresa’s experiences with the complexities of securities compliance and defense matters and her insights as a former regulator into how the SEC approaches various issues will be incredibly valuable to our clients.”

BakerHostetler has more than 360 litigators in its 14 offices across the nation. Composed of former prosecutors, veteran civil trial lawyers and former enforcement officials from both state and federal agencies, the firm’s decorated national Litigation Group has for decades successfully represented clients in matters ranging from massive class action lawsuits, to white collar and corporate investigations, to complex energy matters and beyond.
