BakerHostetler Teams Recognized as Top Practices in the U.S. by Law360

Firm's Privacy and Energy practices earn "Practice Group of the Year" distinction

Press Releases / December 23, 2015

CLEVELAND, Dec. 23, 2015 — BakerHostetler’s Privacy and Data Protection team and Energy team have each been named among the nation’s best practices by Law360 in its annual rankings. This is the third consecutive year the Privacy and Data Protection team has earned this honor, and the inaugural year for the Energy team. BakerHostetler is one of only 80 firms nationwide to earn this year’s honors. Law360 selected the teams for its “Practice Group of the Year” recognitions from 730 submissions in 2015. A record 184 winners across 30 practice areas were selected for “sealing the biggest deals and securing wins in high-stakes litigation.”

“Privacy Practice Group of the Year”

The firm’s 40-member Privacy and Data Protection team continues its winning streak for the third straight year, recognized for its comprehensive legal counsel in incident response, regulatory defense, litigation, and proactive compliance counseling. In 2015, the team counseled more than 250 of the nation’s largest companies in retail, healthcare, financial services, consumer brands, technology, and government municipalities through high-profile matters. The Privacy and Data Protection team earned this year’s honor for its win on behalf of GameStop, which was accused of failing to uphold its privacy policy when incorporating Facebook features in its subscription services.

In addition to this practice award, individual attorneys in the group have been recognized, including team leader Ted Kobus (2013 MVP for Privacy and Consumer Protection), partner Craig Hoffman (2015 Privacy Rising Star), and Class Action Defense team leader Paul Karlsgodt (Privacy MVP in 2014 and 2015). BakerHostetler’s Privacy and Data Protection team is ranked for “longstanding expertise in major data breaches” and “significant regulatory practice” in the 2015 edition of Chambers USA, and is also ranked in Chambers Global — USA, Privacy & Data Security.

“Energy Practice Group of the Year”

BakerHostetler’s Energy team is recognized for its ability to handle a range of high-stakes litigation in federal and state courts for some of the nation’s largest independent oil and gas producers. The 80-member team provides international and domestic energy companies and service providers in oil, natural gas, shale, and alternative energy with highly specialized guidance on matters related to production, distribution, financing, litigation, regulatory compliance, and bankruptcy.

This is the inaugural year the team was selected for its skillful work in the energy sector. Most notable is the team’s representation of two of the most prominent national industry trade associations that are challenging the government’s final rules intended to govern hydraulic fracturing on federal and Indian lands. Since the initial filing in March, the states of Wyoming, North Dakota, Colorado, and Utah, as well as the Ute and Southern Ute Indian tribes, have joined the lawsuit. In the fall, United States District Judge Scott Skavdahl ruled in favor of the team’s motion for a preliminary injunction delaying the implementation of the rules, and he recently denied a request by environmental groups seeking a final ruling and an expedited appeal.

Partners Marty Booher and Poe Leggette lead the Energy team. Booher is resident in the Cleveland office and is a Chambers-ranked “Natural Resources and Environmental” lawyer. Leggette, the managing partner of the firm’s Denver office, was recently recognized by Law Week Colorado as a “2015 Lawyer of the Year” and has been a Chambers Global and Chambers-ranked leader in “Energy: Oil & Gas” for a total of 10 years. Partner Ray Whitman, a Chambers-ranked “Litigation: Energy and Natural Resources” lawyer resident in the Houston office, is the founding leader of the Energy team and has been instrumental in its success.

BakerHostetler continues to be recognized by leading legal publications and market researchers for its work across the firm’s Business, Employment, Litigation, Intellectual Property and Tax practices. Acritas, a legal market researcher, singled out the firm as a “Rising Star Brand” for top-level litigation; the firm also placed in the top 10 of 322 law firms ranked in BTI Consulting Group’s Client Service 30 survey.

Law360 is a legal publication read by corporate counsel and firm decision makers. The publication covers high-stakes litigation across 40 practice areas, industries, and state sections and includes in-depth analysis from high-profile attorneys at top firms. “Practice Group of the Year” winners will be featured in profiles published in the publication’s newsletters beginning Jan. 5, 2016.
