Among other notable matters, Mr. Warren concluded a residual value insurance coverage case against one of the world’s largest reinsurance organizations. After several years of hard-fought litigation, Mr. Warren and his team obtained a settlement of $279 million.
More recently, after an eight-week jury trial, Mr. Warren won a verdict under Ohio’s version of the RICO statute against a major hospital and health insurance organization, based on the defendants’ practice of making secret payments to independent insurance brokers. The judgment totaled more than $10 million, including an award of attorneys’ fees. Mr. Warren later argued the case on appeal, which resulted in the judgment being affirmed.
Mr. Warren has represented a number of banks and other publicly held companies and their officers in securities class actions and derivative cases. In one ERISA “stock drop” case, involving a company stock fund that lost considerable value during a two-year period, Mr. Warren and his team obtained a dismissal based on standing grounds. This decision—which significantly changed the way in which damages may be measured in these types of cases—was recently affirmed by the Sixth Circuit on appeal.
Mr. Warren also has a strong interest in pro bono work. In a nationally publicized case, he obtained the reversal on appeal of the murder conviction of a 12-year-old boy who had falsely confessed as the result of a coercive interrogation. Subsequently, Mr. Warren and his team brought a civil rights action on behalf of the same client against a chief county prosecutor and other public officials, which resulted in a multimillion-dollar settlement, a letter of apology signed by three police chiefs and, ultimately, the chief prosecutor’s ouster from office. More recently, he won the reversal of another murder conviction on behalf of a college student who had been caught up in a fraternity house brawl.
Mr. Warren has been recognized since 2006 as one of “America’s Leading Business Lawyers” by Chambers USA, which has noted that clients praise him for his “razor-sharp strategic mind and effective communication skills.” He also has regularly been listed in America’s Best Lawyers, in which he was described as “a superb litigator” who “can distill the most complicated matters down to a simple, cogent theme.” He has long been included in Ohio Super Lawyers by Law & Politics, which recently recognized Mr. Warren as one of the Top 50 Super Lawyers in Cleveland.
