Federal Policy

BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team provides a full range of services to businesses of all sizes, from global corporations to startup firms. Blue-chip manufacturers, trusted financial firms, trade associations and clinical-stage research companies have turned to the Federal Policy team based on our solid record of accomplishment in providing careful, competent counsel, as well as direct advocacy and lobbying services.

Our team includes former government officials from Congress and the United States diplomatic corps, as well as former staff to members of Congress and congressional committees. The Federal Policy team also relies on the counsel of BakerHostetler attorneys who have served as staff at the White House, the Treasury Department, the Food and Drug Administration, and other executive agencies.

The 2016 addition of former Rep. Mike Ferguson as leader of BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team affirmed our reputation as a pre-eminent policy firm among decision-makers in Washington. Ferguson spent eight years representing New Jersey in the House of Representatives, including as a member of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee, which has broad jurisdiction, including health care, telecommunications and energy policy. Our value proposition is straightforward: We leverage the combined experience and diverse backgrounds of these former officials and staff to deliver value‐added government affairs consulting services, which includes around‐the‐corner policy and political insight that provides clients with a view into processes and personalities that impact future legislative and regulatory actions.

We routinely help clients recognize their risks and opportunities in Washington, identify and develop potential champions on Capitol Hill, and take action to minimize those risks or maximize those opportunities. We craft legislation and advocate for legislative outcomes, seek advice from current policy leaders regarding possible future initiatives, and work with agencies to implement regulations that meet clients’ business and strategic goals. With a strong focus on client service, team members are always accessible and available to our clients. Representative clients include Alibaba, the Children’s Hospital Association, Celgene, CR Bard, FINRA, Genentech, Nasdaq, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Prudential Financial.

The Federal Policy team is renowned for providing legislative, regulatory and tax strategic counsel to a diverse set of clients. For the 28th year, we are co-sponsors of the Annual Legislative Seminar, widely considered Washington’s most prominent annual seminar on legislative policy developments.
