“Before the Storm,” a recent episode of the long-running TV series 20/20, tells the story of Anthony Harris, who was 12 years old in 1998 when he was arrested and convicted for killing his 5-year-old neighbor Devan Duniver. According to Harris’ attorneys, intimidating interrogation techniques used by New Philadelphia, Ohio, police resulted in Harris confessing to the crime, a confession he later recanted.
BakerHostetler attorney Dan Warren was part of a team representing Harris on his successful criminal appeal, but Harris’ conviction and the ongoing efforts of Tuscarawas County prosecutor Amanda Spies to paint him as a murderer even after his release had lasting effects on his life. Harris, again represented by a team including Warren, filed suit against Spies and Tuscarawas County, which ultimately resulted in a settlement of $2.2 million. Warren was among those interviewed by 20/20 and he appears in the episode.
