Summary
Author plaintiffs filed a class action complaint against Anthropic alleging Anthropic infringed their copyrights by using their copyrighted books to train its Claude LLMs. The court granted summary judgment for Anthropic that training LLMs on copyrighted materials is fair use. The court also concluded, “Anthropic had no entitlement to use pirated copies for its central library. Creating a permanent, general-purpose library was not itself a fair use excusing Anthropic’s piracy.” The parties settled shortly thereafter.
