Fraudulent Use of Our Name
Individuals have impersonated attorneys and pretended to be affiliated with law firms, including our firm and attorneys.
There are various methods used to impersonate attorneys. Recent examples have involved fake ads on social media and contacts through messaging platforms like WhatsApp, Signal, and Telegram. They also use spoofed email domains – email accounts that are confusingly similar to our legitimate email domain. Genuine emails from BakerHostetler use the domain @bakerlaw.com.
Fraudulent communications could suggest that a lottery prize or inheritance can be obtained by paying an upfront fee and then contacting someone at our firm to collect. Another variant is to send demands for money in relation to potential legal work or non-existent legal claims. Sometimes fake documents referring to the firm's name and/or its lawyers are sent to support the scam.
