Training and Professional Development

Lawyers succeed with training and personal and professional development opportunities. At BakerHostetler, these opportunities begin early in an associate's career and continue through the partner level.

Associate Academy

Every first-year associate is invited to attend our Associate Academy within six months of joining the firm. From business development and communication skills to negotiation and legal writing, the Associate Academy provides targeted training for our first-year attorneys while giving them the opportunity to meet and network with peers from other offices.

Nineteen first-year associates gathered in Cleveland in February 2019 for BakerHostetler’s 20th Annual Associate Academy, a four-day program featuring presentations from industry experts and a number of BakerHostetler partners.

Diverse Attorney Conference

Held every two years, BakerHostetler’s Diverse Attorney Conference includes two days of small-group discussions, general sessions on a variety of professional development topics and multiple networking opportunities. More than 100 attorneys representing all the firm’s offices and members of firm management attended the 2018 conference.

Werten F.W. Bellamy Jr., founder of the annual “Charting Your Own Course” career development conference for minority attorneys was the keynote speaker, opening the conference with his presentation, “Moving Your Career to the Next Level.”

Women attorneys participate in every level of BakerHostetler’s management. A quarter of the firm’s Policy Committee are women and our fastest-growing office is led by a female managing partner. Women serve as practice groups chairs, practice and industry team leaders, business development leaders, hiring partners and pro bono leaders. The firm has also been recognized by Working Mother magazine as one the 2018 “Best Law Firms for Women.”

We also encourage our lawyers to participate in local, regional and national events that aim to advance the case for women in leadership roles in the legal profession. The firm continues to look for opportunities to sponsor programs whose goals match our own.
