Federal Policy

Overview

Clients ranging from global corporations to startup firms turn to BakerHostetler for federal government affairs advocacy services because we are uniquely qualified to help them assess their legislative and regulatory risks, leverage opportunities, and identify potential legislative champions. We offer shrewd, practical and actionable counsel and have established a solid record of success in our lobbying efforts while helping shape the direction of federal policy.

Our Federal Policy team boasts many members who worked in federal government prior to joining BakerHostetler – serving in Congress, as senior congressional and committee staff, and in the executive branch. Members of our team have led congressional oversight investigations, making them exceptionally qualified to counsel clients who are facing such investigations.

With our combined experience and diverse government backgrounds, we offer policy insights into the politics, processes and personalities that help determine future legislative and regulatory actions. We draw on our extensive experience and contacts within government to glean insights from policymakers on upcoming initiatives and work effectively with federal departments and agencies to implement regulations that meet clients’ business and strategic goals. We also help CEOs and other executives prepare to testify before congressional committees, including by participating in mock hearings.

We represent major companies – such as AbbVie, Cardinal Health, Meta, Nasdaq, the New York Stock Exchange, PhRMA, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Prudential Financial – with multifaceted concerns and ambitious goals regarding federal law and policy.

  • When lawmakers sought to enact legislation that would have jeopardized patient access to a lifesaving oncology drug, we successfully lobbied Congress on behalf of a blue-chip pharmaceutical manufacturer and blocked the legislation from being enacted.
  • We assist clients in growing their corporate political action committees (PACs), including among employee donors, and in developing strategies to ensure PAC contributions dovetail with their efforts to build legislative champions.
  • We successfully built bipartisan support in Congress to repeal a corporate excise tax that was stifling clients’ R&D investments and their ability to develop innovative technologies.
