Federal Policy

Overview

Our Federal Policy team includes two former Members of Congress – one Republican, one Democrat – as well as former senior congressional and committee staff and former executive branch officials. We provide a full range of government affairs, public policy and lobbying services to businesses of all sizes. Global corporations and startup firms turn to us because we provide clients with careful, competent counsel and because of our solid record of accomplishment when advocating to shape policy outcomes on Capitol Hill and in the Trump administration.

The 2016 addition of former Congressman Mike Ferguson as leader of BakerHostetler’s Federal Policy team affirmed our reputation as a preeminent policy firm among Washington decision-makers. Congressman Ferguson represented New Jersey for nearly a decade in the House, including serving as a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, which has broad jurisdiction over telecommunications, healthcare and energy policies. He also served on the Financial Services Committee.

We leverage the combined experience and diverse backgrounds of these former government officials to deliver value-added government affairs consulting services, including around-the-corner policy insight that provides clients with visibility into the politics, processes and personalities that impact future legislative and regulatory actions.

We help clients recognize and inventory their vulnerabilities and opportunities in Washington – and take action to minimize the vulnerabilities and maximize the opportunities. We identify and develop potential legislative champions, draft legislation and lobby to shape legislative outcomes, and work with agencies to implement regulations that meet clients’ business and strategic goals.

Representative clients include AbbVie Inc., Alibaba Group, the Biotechnology Innovation Organization, Cardinal Health, Facebook Inc., Gilead Sciences, Nasdaq, PhRMA, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Prudential Financial and others.

In 2019, we hosted the 30th annual BakerHostetler Legislative Seminar, widely considered Washington’s premier annual showcase of legislative policy developments. Vice President Mike Pence keynoted this seminar, and in previous years we have featured top policymakers from both parties, who provided our clients with valuable insight into the latest developments on energy policy, tax reform, infrastructure, healthcare, immigration, government spending and more.
