The BakerHostetler Affordable Housing team took part in the grand opening celebration for The Rebekah, the final affordable housing component of the redeveloped RBJ Residences in Austin, Texas. Named after President Lyndon B. Johnson’s mother, Rebekah Baines Johnson, the complex was conceptualized by Johnson more than 50 years ago as a comprehensive residential facility for low-income seniors. As redeveloped, it includes a community garden, coffee shop and medical offices among the amenities.
The redevelopment doubled the number of available affordable units by constructing a new facility known as The Ladybird and renovating the existing RBJ Tower, now known as The Rebekah. Funds for this project were raised through the sale of a portion of the development’s land and combined with federal, state and local sources. Partners Cynthia Bast and Richard Morrow and Counsel Christine Richardson were the lead lawyers on the deal.
