BakerHostetler recorded a win for client Maria Grand when the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit declined to revive jazz saxophonist Steve Coleman’s lawsuit against his former pupil, which alleged that she defamed him in a #MeToo-inspired letter to friends and colleagues in 2017. In a 2-1 decision, judges ruled that the letter was not defamatory under New York state law, as that would require the letter and its contents to be statements of fact or expressions of opinion based on suggested facts.
