Renee is a skilled brief writer and has represented clients in complex issues at every stage of litigation in federal and state courts across the country. She has experience in nearly every federal court of appeals. At the trial level, Renee has been an integral member of multiple trial teams, including in one four-week jury trial in the D.C. Superior Court and another three-week bench trial in federal court in the District of Columbia. She has argued motions and examined a witness. Clients appreciate her attention to detail, efficient approach to problem solving, calm presence and persistent drive for excellence.

Before joining BakerHostetler, Renee served as a judicial law clerk for Judge Leslie Southwick on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and for Judge Claude Hilton on the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

<li>Defended a journalist in a four-week jury trial in Washington, D.C. Superior Court against claims of defamation brought by a prominent scientist. The jury ruled in the client’s favor on half of the at-issue statements and awarded nominal damages amounting to only 0.01% of the plaintiff’s demand on the remainder. After trial, the Court awarded more than $475,000 in attorney’s fees to the journalist and a co-defendant.</li>
<li>Defended a cable news network against claims of defamation brought by a technology company’s statements made regarding the 2020 Presidential election. The case settled on favorable terms as the jury was being empaneled.</li>
<li>Defended a publisher against claims of defamation from former Congressional employees and obtained a favorable settlement.</li>
<li>Defended a journalist against claims of defamation brought by a professor involving #MeToo issues and obtained a favorable settlement vindicating the journalist’s First Amendment rights.</li>

<li>Represented an energy company in an appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit from an adverse jury verdict and successfully obtained vacatur of a more than $6 million dollar damages award and reversal of attorney’s fee award.</li>
<li>Represented a hotel in an appeal from an adverse NLRB decision to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit and successfully obtained a 3-0 reversal.</li>
<li>Represented an inventor in a three-week bench trial on whether the inventor was barred by prosecution laches from obtaining multiple patents.</li>
<li>Represented a global energy company in litigation related to legacy ownership of a fuel terminal and successfully defended and obtained partial summary judgment, resulting in a favorable settlement.</li>
<li>Represented a product manufacturer in aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) multidistrict litigation in the U.S. District Court for the District of South Carolina.</li>
<li>Drafted an amici curiae brief to the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of acclaimed economists and law professors arguing that a state statute with residency requirements for obtaining and renewing a retail liquor license violated the dormant commerce clause and the Supreme Court agreed in a unanimous decision.</li>
