Partners Bethany Lukitsch and Paul Karlsgodt co-authored an article with Associates Andrew Burnquist and Safina Motiwala for Law.com’s Cybersecurity Law & Strategy titled “Click, Track, Sue: California Reconsiders CIPA’s Reach.” Published July 31, 2026, the article focuses on the narrower version of Senate Bill 690 passed and sent to Assembly Appropriations by California lawmakers that is aimed at curbing a rush of California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA) trap and trace/pen register claims that challenge routine website and app technologies.
California courts have struggled with the novel application of CIPA to modern technology. SB 690 is an attempt to respond to at least part of the issue.
