Partner John Carney commented on the new Financial Reporting and Accounting Unit announced last month by the Securities and Exchange Commission in both a Thomson Reuters article (“SEC Forms Specialized Unit to Tackle Accounting Fraud,” Aug. 13, 2026) and a Bloomberg Law article (“SEC’s Accounting Unit Seen as Core Fraud Enforcement Engine,” Sept. 3, 2026). The articles discussed how the new unit will pursue accounting and financial reporting fraud cases and general misconduct in the accounting/auditing areas. Carney commented that the fact the unit was formed at all gives a clear indication that the SEC believes there are problems in the industry and is serious about pursuing them. He also stated that public companies and accounting firms should undertake a self-assessment to make sure that they haven’t overlooked something that could be an issue for the SEC.
