Partner John Siegal has been interviewed extensively about a New York bill that aims to ban noncompete agreements and void ones that already exist. The bill has passed both houses of the state legislature and awaits New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s signature.

Siegal told Forbes that nobody expected a bill like this to come out of this legislative session. And to SHRM, he said the bill means that businesses will need to become “more flexible and creatively use less restrictive employee agreements.”

He described the proposed noncompete ban to&nbsp;Law360&nbsp;as “a very broad, sweeping, blunt instrument of legislation.” And to&nbsp;New York Law Journal, Siegal said the bill could damage the state’s investment environment and lead executives to leave one company and start work at a competitor the next day. It also would not allow employers to pay people during a noncompete period, he said.
