HEADLINES



<ul>
<li>President Joe Biden plans to meet again tomorrow with congressional leaders to continue negotiations to raise the debt limit and prevent a potentially catastrophic default.</li>



<li>Committees on both sides of the Capitol will dig into the collapses earlier this year of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank.</li>



<li>Biden will begin a trip to Japan, Papua New Guinea and Australia.</li>
</ul>



HOUSE



<ul>
<li>The House will <a href="https://www.majorityleader.gov/schedule/weekly-schedule.htm">vote</a> tonight through Thursday, focusing on legislation supporting police officers during <a href="https://www.policeweek.org/schedule.html">National Police Week</a>.</li>



<li>Tomorrow, the House Financial Services Committee will hold an oversight <a href="https://financialservices.house.gov/calendar/eventsingle.aspx?EventID=408768">hearing</a> with federal financial regulators, followed by a Wednesday <a href="https://financialservices.house.gov/calendar/eventsingle.aspx?EventID=408778">hearing</a> examining the failures of Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank with the banks’ former executives. <a></a></li>



<li>Wednesday, the Select Committee on the CCP will hold a primetime <a href="https://selectcommitteeontheccp.house.gov/committee-activity/hearings/hearing-notice-leveling-playing-field-how-counter-chinese-communist">hearing</a> titled “Leveling the Playing Field: How to Counter the Chinese Communist Party’s Economic Aggression.”</li>

SENATE



<ul>
<li>The Senate will be in session all week, continuing <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/floor_activity_pail.htm">consideration</a> of Biden’s nominees.</li>



<li>The Senate Appropriations Committee tomorrow will hold a <a href="https://www.appropriations.senate.gov/hearings/a-review-of-the-presidents-fy-24-budget-request-investing-in-us-security-competitiveness-and-the-path-ahead-for-the-us-china-relationship?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=5/15/23%20%20Punchbowl%20News%20AM&utm_term=Punchbowl%20AM%20and%20Active%20Subscribers%20from%20Memberful%20Combined">hearing</a> on the U.S.-China relationship, with testimony from Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.</li>



<li>The Senate Banking Committee on Tuesday will <a href="https://www.banking.senate.gov/hearings/examining-the-failures-of-silicon-valley-bank-and-signature-bank?utm_source=Sailthru&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=5/15/23%20%20Punchbowl%20News%20AM&utm_term=Punchbowl%20AM%20and%20Active%20Subscribers%20from%20Memberful%20Combined">hear</a> from the former Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank executives, followed by a Thursday <a href="https://www.banking.senate.gov/hearings/oversight-of-financial-regulators-financial-stability-supervision-and-consumer-protection-in-the-wake-of-recent-bank-failures">hearing</a> with financial regulators.</li>

WHITE HOUSE



<ul>
<li>Biden plans to meet with congressional leaders tomorrow after some apparent <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/14/politics/debt-limit-talks-biden-republicans-cnntv/index.html">progress</a> in staff-level negotiations.</li>



<li>The president will also <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/05/14/politics/debt-limit-talks-biden-republicans-cnntv/index.html">mark</a> Jewish American Heritage Month tomorrow at the White House.</li>



<li>Wednesday, Biden will begin a weeklong <a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-japan-australia-papua-new-guinea-china-718642fdb7b3b5c14cf6c27dded1933c">trip</a> to Asia, beginning with a bilateral meeting in Hiroshima with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.</li>
