Many organizations mistakenly believe that the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) only regulates lobbying activities on behalf of foreign governments. However, FARA's scope is much broader. It encompasses activities such as public relations, media work, and general advisory services on how to interact with the U.S. government. And FARA’s registration requirements apply not only to work performed for a foreign government or political party, but also to work done for or on behalf of any foreign national, whether an individual or a company, based outside the United States. All are considered to be “foreign principals” under the statute.
