Ed McAndrew Calls Sentence of Former Uber Cyber Security Chief ‘Chilling'

Following the sentencing of a former Uber cybersecurity chief to three years of probation for criminal obstruction, Partner Ed McAndrew told the Wall Street Journal this could have a “chilling” effect on the cybersecurity field.

According to the May 5, 2023, WSJ article, “Prosecution of Former Uber Security Chief Carries Warnings for Cyber Leaders,” the Uber executive failed to report a data breach in 2016, and his team paid hackers $100,000 to refrain from publishing data they had accessed. The latter is a practice McAndrew says is commonplace today.
