Joe works with clients to implement wealth transfer strategies that contain the right balance of personal planning and tax savings objectives. Charitable planning is also an important facet of Joe’s practice, as he is able to offer solutions to clients that allow them to accomplish their philanthropic goals. Joe also has a focus on advising closely held business owners with respect to business succession planning and organizational structure and governance. He will often serve as outside general counsel to such businesses, coordinating with BakerHostetler attorneys in various practice groups to accomplish the matter at hand.

<li>Designed and implemented estate plan documents for a husband and wife consisting of wills, revocable trusts, instruments of assignment of tangibles, financial powers of attorney, healthcare documents, semi-revocable “management trusts” for their children, grantor-retained annuity trusts, “generation skipping” irrevocable grantor trusts, and sale and purchase documentation for the sale of closely held business interests to such generation-skipping trusts (i.e., purchase agreements, notes and pledge agreements). Designed and implemented shareholder agreements for companies owned by the family, and designed and implemented various LLCs to hold and manage certain family assets.</li>
<li>Drafted a trust designed to promote a client’s descendants to be actively involved in the management of various businesses owned by the trust.</li>
<li>Draft revocable trusts to include “look through” or “accumulation” trust terms so that retirement account assets can be transferred to the trusts and the income tax deferral aspects of the assets can be preserved to the maximum extent possible.</li>
<li>Counsel clients on the differences between family foundations and donor advised funds, and the pros and cons of establishing a family foundation as a trust or a nonprofit corporation.</li>
<li>Counsel clients on governance structure for family controlled entities (corporations, limited partnerships and LLCs) and annual obligations for the parties thereto (i.e., shareholders, boards of directors, LLC managers, etc.).</li>
