Erdal Riza Dervis is a registered patent lawyer with more than 20 years of experience in patent and intellectual property law. Erdal focuses on patent prosecution and patent portfolio management, freedom-to-operate (FTO) and patent infringement and validity analysis, and intellectual property due diligence in mergers and acquisitions and business transactions.
Erdal prepares and prosecutes patent applications before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and manages patent portfolios and advises on patent and intellectual property rights internationally, including Europe, Canada, Asia and Australia. He also counsels clients and prepares opinions on patent validity, patentability, trade secrets, patent infringement, litigation and strategy, and product clearance and development strategy. In addition, Erdal has experience in business and commercial transactions, including those involving the purchase, sale, licensing and joint development of intellectual property.
Erdal has deep technical experience with numerous and wide-ranging technologies, with a special focus on medical devices including vascular, respiratory, surgical, anesthesia and urological products, and further including automotive, aerospace, transport and defense-related technologies, nuclear and renewable energy, consumer products and container and packaging technology. Erdal trains and educates client personnel in all aspects of intellectual property and supports client innovation and new product development at all stages.
Prior to law school, Erdal researched and developed advanced aerospace technologies in government-funded laboratories and industry manufacturing centers, including laser-diagnostic techniques for measuring gas dynamic properties of jets in conjunction with the NASA Langley Research Center, novel wing designs for military and civilian transport aircraft for Lockheed-Martin and satellite-based information access and distribution systems for less-developed countries with a nonprofit international development agency in Washington, D.C.
