The 2024 presidential election is officially underway with Donald Trump’s victory in the Iowa Republican caucuses.

Snow closed the federal government and is disrupting travel to Washington as lawmakers return to vote on a <a href="https://rollcall.com/2024/01/14/march-stopgap-funding-bill-unveiled-ahead-of-friday-deadline/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bipartisan agreement</a> to extend government funding before Friday’s deadline.

President Joe Biden will meet with the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

The House canceled votes today and now will be in <a href="https://www.majorityleader.gov/schedule/weekly-schedule.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">session</a> tomorrow through Friday, planning <a href="https://rules.house.gov/news/announcement/meeting-announcement-january-16-2024" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">votes</a> to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress, as well as legislation to fund the government until early March.

The Transportation Committee will hold a <a href="https://transportation.house.gov/calendar/eventsingle.aspx?EventID=407090" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hearing</a> tomorrow on “The State of Transportation.”

Also tomorrow, the Foreign Affairs Committee will hold a <a href="https://foreignaffairs.house.gov/hearing/examining-the-flow-of-u-s-money-into-chinas-military-might/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hearing</a> titled “Examining the Flow of U.S. Money into China’s Military Might.”

The Senate is scheduled to resume floor <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/floor_activity_pail.htm" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">votes</a> this evening, also taking up the funding extension to keep the government open.

The top tax writers in each chamber <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/01/16/tax-chiefs-reach-deal-on-child-credit-business-breaks-00135631" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">announced</a> an agreement on legislation to boost the Child Tax Credit and three business tax breaks.

Tomorrow, the Foreign Relations Committee will receive a closed <a href="https://www.foreign.senate.gov/hearings/strategic-implications-for-cross-straits-relations-of-the-2024-taiwan-elections" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">briefing</a> on the strategic implications of Taiwan’s election.

Trump <a href="https://www.desmoinesregister.com/elections/results/2024-01-15/primaries/republican/iowa?itm_source=oembed&itm_medium=news&itm_campaign=front&itm_content=presidential-primary-single" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">won</a> yesterday’s Iowa caucuses, as expected, with attention immediately turning to New Hampshire’s primary one week from today.

President Joe Biden has little on his public schedule this week after returning from Philadelphia, where he <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/administration/4409403-biden-visits-food-bank-to-mark-mlk-holiday/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">observed</a> Martin Luther King Jr. Day by volunteering at a food bank.
