Jeff Rosedale, Ph.D. is one of BakerHostetler’s most experienced IP partners, with more than 20 years as a registered U.S. patent lawyer and 10 years as an R&D chemical engineer. His areas of concentration include developing IP strategies and international patent portfolios for many early-stage companies covering a wide variety of technical areas, including the life sciences, advanced materials and consumer products.

Jeff has also negotiated numerous license agreements on behalf of clients and routinely provides strategic patent prosecution guidance and patent diligence advice in connection with high value transactions. In view of his breadth of experience, he is a partner in both of our Patent Prosecution Groups - IP Life Sciences and Advanced Materials as well as IP Technology.

Jeff works at the cutting edge of science and technology to develop and protect clients’ intellectual property. He helps clients, including many startups and early-stage companies, draft IP-critical agreements such as licenses, joint-development agreements and joint-venture agreements. Jeff has significant experience negotiating and structuring complex life science exclusive license and technology agreements in developing areas, often addressing numerous issues—such as IP ownership, regulatory pathways, commercialization rights and milestone obligations—within a single comprehensive agreement. He also works with clients to develop IP strategies, patent portfolios and licensing strategies, leveraging his extensive technical background. Similarly, Jeff advises venture capital and private equity firms by providing critical evaluations of the IP portfolios of their target investments.

A frequent lecturer on IP and a frequently cited author, Jeff is well versed in the trends and nuances of multiple industries. As a result of his 30 year career in engineering, science, innovation and patent law, Jeff has worked on a very wide array of technologies and scientific disciplines, including chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, biochemical engineering, biomechanical engineering, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals (small molecule and biologics), medical devices, transdermal technologies, advanced materials such as polymers, coatings, silicon carbide, and electroactive fibers, magnets and metallurgy, nanotechnology, 3-D printing and bioprinting, electronics, display systems (OLED, microLED, quantum-dot, flexible LCD), augmented reality / virtual reality (AR/VR), 3D computer engineering, additive manufacturing, drones and autonomous systems, fuel chemistry, physical chemistry, energy storage and photovoltaics, secure communications and blockchain, agriculture, aquaculture, sensors, microfluidics, data encryption, as well as in the emerging fields of quantum physics, quantum computer and artificial intelligence (including avatars, language models, and robotics).
