Doug has spent more than two decades representing technology companies, software developers, manufacturers, consumer-product companies, online platforms and innovators in their most significant disputes. He regularly serves as lead counsel in patent litigation, trade secret misappropriation actions, restrictive covenant disputes, unfair competition claims, technology-driven business tort cases and other high-stakes commercial litigation. His practice spans federal courts throughout the United States, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the Federal Circuit and international arbitral tribunals.

Known for developing aggressive and creative litigation strategies, Doug has built a reputation for securing favorable outcomes in difficult cases. He has successfully invalidated asserted patents, defeated infringement claims, obtained dismissals of complex litigation, secured summary judgment victories, defended favorable judgments on appeal, prosecuted trade secret and unfair competition claims, and resolved business-critical disputes involving substantial intellectual property and commercial interests. Clients frequently engage him at pivotal moments when litigation, business strategy and competitive risk converge.

Doug's experience spans an unusually broad range of technologies and industries, including software systems, artificial intelligence, online gaming platforms, geolocation technologies, wireless communications, semiconductors, satellite communications networks, medical devices, consumer products, advanced manufacturing and outdoor recreation products. His ability to quickly master complex technologies and translate them into persuasive courtroom arguments allows him to effectively advocate before judges, arbitrators and juries in highly technical matters.

A significant portion of Doug's practice involves disputes at the intersection of technology, intellectual property and competition. He regularly handles matters involving software ecosystems, digital platforms, emerging technologies, licensing disputes and business relationships that define a company's competitive position. Clients rely on his ability to combine technical understanding, litigation strategy and practical business judgment to advance their objectives in matters where the stakes extend far beyond the courtroom.

In addition to his litigation practice, Doug serves as outside intellectual property counsel to a number of technology companies and globally recognized consumer brands. He advises clients on worldwide patent and trademark strategy, portfolio management, intellectual property enforcement, licensing initiatives, product clearance and freedom-to-operate issues. His counseling work is informed by decades of litigation experience, allowing him to identify risks, opportunities and competitive advantages that others often miss.

Doug regularly leads matters involving North America, China, Hong Kong and Europe, including international arbitration proceedings and worldwide intellectual property portfolio management. He frequently works directly with founders, chief executive officers, boards of directors and general counsel on issues affecting intellectual property rights, product development, competitive strategy and corporate growth.

Before becoming a lawyer, Doug spent nearly a decade as a professional high-altitude mountain guide, leading expeditions throughout the Himalayas, Andes and major North American mountain ranges. The preparation, leadership, risk assessment and decision-making required in extreme environments continue to influence his approach to high-stakes litigation and client counseling.

<li>Defended the world market leader in mechanized tunnel technology in a patent infringement action. Two other companies (not represented by Doug) entered a consent decree conceding infringement and immediately paying damages. Doug led a team that obtained a full and free license to the asserted patent five months after the plaintiff filed suit. The plaintiff did not bother to appeal, and the client paid nothing.</li>
<li>Defended a high-tech real estate brokerage in a patent infringement action. Ten other companies (not represented by Doug) elected to settle in lieu of litigation. Doug led a team that invalidated the asserted patent. The plaintiff did not bother to appeal, and the client paid nothing.</li>
<li>Defended a well-known skiing manufacturer in a patent infringement action. Doug was a second chair on a team that invalidated the asserted patent. The decision was affirmed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the client paid nothing and all of the plaintiff’s pre-existing patent licenses were immediately voided, world-wide.</li>
<li>Defended a high-profile, multinational corporation that operates membership-only warehouse clubs in a patent infringement action. Doug served as second chair on a team that obtained a full non-infringement verdict. The decision was affirmed by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the client paid nothing.</li>
<li>Defended two prominent online dating platforms in patent infringement actions. Doug led a team that invalidated 85 patent claims across four patents with a single 20-page motion—a result summarily affirmed on appeal. His team then sought and won an award of attorneys’ fees: 100% of his attorney fees were ordered to be paid by the party that brought the lawsuit.</li>
