Los Angeles Summer Program

“As a summer associate at BakerHostetler, I felt truly welcomed and was received as another valued member of the team. From the first day, I was given real, substantive work assignments that allowed me to get a true sense of what it means to be an associate at BakerHostetler. As I explored various practice areas this summer, I always felt supported and was encouraged by both partners and associates to ask questions. I truly feel fortunate to have worked under the guidance of such an incredible group of attorneys!

To future associates I say: You will learn a lot about what it means to practice law and, more specifically, what it means to practice in a specific group, but one thing to know is that everyone at BakerHostetler already wants you to succeed and is excited to help you begin your legal career!”

- Stephanie Alvarez Salgado, University of Southern California

The Los Angeles Summer Associate Program is designed to give law students a realistic look into our practices with opportunities to learn what associate life is like and exposure to our greatest asset—our people. “You’ll meet the best people in the legal profession. Good people who care about you and will take time to teach you and answer questions. The kindness and warmth of every single person I came across, and the extent of teamwork is what I would emphasize. The firm has such special chemistry,” said a recent summer associate.

At BakerHostetler, our well-rounded summer program is designed to provide students with the training, experience, and confidence necessary to begin the journey to become great lawyers who will enjoy their colleagues and their work.

Learning Opportunities

Our goal is to give each summer associate the best experience we can while they are with us. Summer associates often accompany lawyers to a variety of client-related events. Below are just some of the valuable experiences provided to our summer associates:

  • Trials
  • Arbitrations
  • Negotiations
  • Depositions
  • Client Meetings & Calls
  • Board Meetings
  • Attend court proceedings
  • Pro Bono volunteer experience and initiatives
  • Practice Group Meetings & Trainings

Mentoring

We assign a partner to supervise the summer associates and help them manage their workloads. Each summer associate is also paired with a mentor lawyer. Mentors assist their mentees in acclimating to the firm and answer questions regarding assignments, the summer program, or any other questions that may arise during the summer. A past summer associate on their mentor: “Great person to talk to anything about. Helped me feel more comfortable with introductions to various associates and partners and advised me on writing and work product.”

Work Assignments

Summer associates work on projects assigned directly by various lawyers in the office. The projects are real work assignments, identical to those that would be given to associates and are not limited to any type of work or practice area. A past summer associate commented that the work was “interesting, educational, intense at times, so much fun. I feel like I got a sense of how it is to play on Baker’s team. I got great insight into the firm, its people and its work.” Summer associates in previous years completed the following projects:

  • Motion for Summary Judgment
  • Motion in Limine
  • Motion to Compel and Protective Orders
  • Expert witness data preparation
  • Research and preparation for oral argument
  • Draft and respond to discovery requests
  • Amendment to group operating agreement
  • Treatise updates with authorship credit
  • Curate speakers and organize conference

Social Events

Just as our summer associates will experience hard work, they will also enjoy the camaraderie that comes with being part of BakerHostetler. The social calendar is designed to enable our summer associates and lawyers to get to know each other in a more relaxed atmosphere and to acquaint out-of-towners with the Los Angeles area. In addition to lunches, happy hours, and impromptu gatherings, here are some examples of social activities conducted in the past:

  • Cirque du Soleil
  • Dodger Games
  • Movie Night
  • Dinner at the Getty Center
  • Cooking and Mixology Classes
  • Wine Tasting and Safari
  • Pageant of the Masters
  • Concerts at the Hollywood Bowl, Santa Monica Pier,
