The Cleveland summer associate program is 10 weeks long, typically starting in May and concluding by end of July. During that period, we strive to provide a balance of substantive work assignments, training programs and exciting social events. Our summer class is comprised of predominantly second-year law students who are at the top of their classes.

Over the last several years, we’ve had summer associates from the following law schools: Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Virginia, University of Michigan, Georgetown University, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Notre Dame, Emory University, Indiana University, The Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University and the University of Akron. Our expectation is that each summer associate will receive an offer to join the firm upon completion of law school.

Work Assignments

One or two of our associates coordinate work assignments for our summer associates. We distribute assignments to summer associates based on their practice areas of interest, capacity and competing deadlines. This allows summer associates to explore different practice areas, which they can continue to do as an unassigned associate for their first year following graduation from law school. We provide constructive and positive feedback throughout the program—both directly from the attorneys assigning the work, as well as in formal review meetings at the mid-point and end of the program. Training

Training is a critical component in every attorney’s professional development. We have an extensive summer-associate writing program that two experienced partners run every year. Following a Legal Writing Workshop we hold at the beginning of the program, each summer associate will complete two 8-10-page memoranda that the assigning partners and our hiring committee review. Each summer associate receives detailed feedback on their writing throughout the summer.

Mentoring

We assign an advisor and a mentor to each summer associate in our program. The advisor is an associate who recently went through the summer program and is now practicing in our Cleveland office. Our advisors meet with summer associates weekly to review work assignments and answer any questions about the firm and its practice areas. The mentor is a member of the Hiring Committee who can also answer any questions about the firm. The mentor and summer associate meet several times throughout the summer program.

Social Events

Our summer program is filled with diverse and exciting social events. Social events provide an opportunity for summer associates to experience the firm's collegial atmosphere and meet lawyers in a relaxed, non-work setting.
