Orlando Summer Program

"So, why BakerHostetler? The short answer would be the people. The people here are amazing. Everyone at this firm is truly rooting for you and wanting you to succeed. I could reach out to anyone to ask questions, whether it was about the assignments that I was getting or about what it’s like to actually be at this firm. I got a lot of feedback on my writing and my assignments, which I really appreciate. They want you to do your best."

– Nailah Bowen, University of Florida Levin College of Law

Our office’s summer program is a fundamental part of our Firm’s hiring process. The majority of our new associates are hired directly through this program. We are intentional in maintaining a relatively small Summer Associate class as it provides us with the best chance to truly know our Summer Associates and the many talents they possess. The program is both rewarding and challenging and provides insight into what it is like to work as a first-year Baker Associate. When hiring each Summer Associate our expectations and goal is that at the conclusion, we are in a position to extend an offer of permanent employment. We are hopeful it is the start of a long and successful career at BakerHostetler.

Work Assignments and Trainings

We are genuinely committed to the professional development and advancement of our Summer Associates. Work assignments are disbursed and tracked utilizing an on-line system that ensures equitable workloads and diverse projects. To assist our Summer Associates in workload management, work coordination meetings are scheduled weekly to discuss the status and any issues related to ongoing projects. Constructive and positive feedback is provided often, directly from the various attorneys assigning work, as well as formal review meetings scheduled throughout the summer. “One of the strengths of this program was the exposure that we received to the different practice groups through assignments and social events,” stated a recent Summer Associate.

In addition to actual work assignments, you will be provided additional opportunities which may include:

  • Trials
  • Arbitrations
  • Negotiations
  • Depositions
  • Client Meetings
    & Calls
  • Local City Council Meetings
  • Real Estate Closings
  • Mediations
  • Board Meetings
  • Hearings and court proceedings
  • Pro Bono initiatives
  • Practice Group Meetings & Trainings

We recognize that training is a critical component in every attorney’s professional development. Recent training sessions throughout the summer included:

  • Legal Writing
  • Negotiation and Trial Skills
  • Inclusion and Diversity
  • Ethics & Professional Liability
  • Timekeeping
  • Trial Training 101
  • Legal Content & Research Services
  • Respectful Workplace Training

Our goal is to provide our Summer Associates with the substantive knowledge, skills, and resources they need to achieve success in their legal careers.

Inclusion and Diversity

BakerHostetler is deeply committed to diversity and inclusion at all levels. We embrace people of all backgrounds as essential to the success of our Firm, our clients and our community.

We provide mentors who will help guide you through all aspects of the summer program. Your mentor is available to discuss all of your concerns and offer valuable insight ranging from how the Firm operates to where’s the best place to eat. They often provide suggestions on the stylistic preferences of various partners, help you connect and get to know your colleagues and give helpful advice regarding work assignments. A past Summer Associate had this to say about her mentor: “My mentor was really great about reaching out to me on a regular basis. She answered all of my silly questions, but didn't make them feel silly. My mentor was always accessible, and she made it clear that I could call or text whenever I needed.”

Social Events

The Orlando office strongly believes in developing and maintaining positive relationships at work and encourages activities and events that promote our collegial atmosphere. Getting to know our attorneys and staff is one of the most important components of a Baker summer experience. Our Firm is comprised of talented individuals from all types of diverse cultures and backgrounds and each one plays a role in contributing to our Firm’s success. In addition to happy hours, casual lunches and impromptu gatherings, past events have included:

  • Private dinner party events at local restaurants
  • Clay Shooting at Quail Creek Plantation
  • Scenic boat tour on local lakes
  • Theme park outings
  • Summer Luau at a partner’s home
  • Orlando City Soccer Game
  • Private Movie Showing

"I don’t think it gets better than Baker. The work is sophisticated, and the attorneys challenge you to be the best version of yourself. As the summer program progresses the attorneys and staff become family. From day one, you know you have an entire team rooting for you to succeed. At the end of my 10-week program felt nothing but sheer gratitude for the experience, the new friends and the ability to feel confident in my future."

– Hanna Elmasry, 2019 Summer Associate and Incoming 2020 Associate, Stetson University College of Law

"My favorite part about the Summer Associate program is the variety of assignments and practice areas you get to work in. It is rewarding to get hands on experience applying the principles learned in law school to the practice of law. I also enjoyed getting to know many of the attorneys through work, social events, and mentoring opportunities. It is a well-rounded program that helped me determine what practice area I want to pursue after law school."

– Cailey Marsh, 2019 Summer Associate and Incoming 2020 Associate, University of Florida Levin
