The philosophy of our summer program is to give law students the experience of what it is like to be a lawyer within our office. Our 10-week program sets the groundwork for a rewarding career with our firm. We expose summer associates to a variety of aspects of the firm, providing them with substantive work, professional training and social networking opportunities. When hiring each summer associate, our expectation and goal is that at the conclusion of the summer program, we are in a position to extend an offer of permanent employment. We are hopeful it is the start of a long and successful career at BakerHostetler.

Work Assignments 

We believe the best way to learn is through first-hand experience and exposure to a variety of projects. Summer associates work directly with assigning attorneys from multiple practice groups.&nbsp; Our open assignment system allows each summer associate to demonstrate individual initiative and gain experience across practice areas.&nbsp; In previous years, summer associates have completed the following types of assignments:

Training

We recognize that training is a critical component in every attorney’s professional development. Training sessions from our most recent summer programs included:

Mentoring 

Summer associates are paired with a partner and associate mentor team. Mentors serve as a valuable resource to summer associates, helping them acclimate to the office and firm; providing guidance on prioritizing and balancing work assignments; and providing useful advice when challenges arise. In addition, summer associates receive regular, real-time feedback from assigning attorneys on their work product and two formal reviews with the office Hiring Partner over the summer.

Social Events

Our summer program is filled with diverse and exciting social events. Social events provide an opportunity for summer associates to experience the firm’s collegial atmosphere and meet lawyers in a relaxed, non-work setting and are key to helping maintain work/life balance.
