New York Summer Program

"The biggest thing for me was finding an office where I felt comfortable with people I knew I would be able to work well with. I worked my way through law school, so I know that finding an office where you fit in is such a big thing. It can really have an impact on your overall quality of life. When I started at Baker, I felt like I was part of a team. I felt like I was contributing something useful and was part of something important, and then I just got to work with so many amazing people."

– Alexandra Karambelas, St. John’s University School of Law

Summer associates gain valuable, firsthand experience at BakerHostetler. Our program is designed to provide a realistic view of life as an associate at the firm, working alongside teams of partners and associates on a variety of billable and pro bono assignments across many practice areas.

Practical training seminars, including a legal writing refresher workshop, tips for having a successful summer experience and practice group luncheons, will help you to learn applied skills necessary for a productive summer experience.

We partner each summer associate with a senior associate who serves as your mentor. Often they are former summer associates who provide you with invaluable advice on your assignments, our firm, office culture and clients. They also help to facilitate introductions to other attorneys in the office to ensure you get to meet and work with a variety of attorneys from different practice areas.

We routinely provide feedback, both formal and informal, throughout your summer with us. While you can expect to receive ongoing feedback as you work on various assignments directly from the attorneys you work with, you will also be formally evaluated twice during the summer. The formal meetings are conducted by attorneys who serve as your assignment coordinators during the summer.

Our summer program provides a balance of realistic work with the opportunity to enjoy the camaraderie that comes from being part of BakerHostetler. We hold a number of social events throughout the summer, including an attorney-hosted dinner party, as well as live theatre performances, a hands-on cooking class, sporting and recreational activities, and many other casual get-togethers. These events enable you and our attorneys to get to know one another socially in a relaxed atmosphere.

At BakerHostetler, our well-rounded summer program is designed to provide students with the training, experience and confidence necessary to begin the journey to become great lawyers who will enjoy their colleagues and their work.
