Philadelphia Summer Program

Initially, BakerHostetler was on my radar solely because of the Philadelphia office’s patent practice – it is the biggest in the city. Then one of the patent litigation partners gave a talk at Villanova and said his favorite part of the job is forming litigation strategy and putting a case together. That really caught my attention because I knew that was something I’d eventually be interested in doing.

During my two summers at BakerHostetler, I was able to work on many different projects, like researching cutting-edge legal issues, working on patent applications for pioneering technologies, creating presentations for clients and co-authoring a blog post with one of the partners.

But BakerHostetler’s main attraction is the people that line its hallways. There is a camaraderie among the attorneys that makes the firm more than just a place to work – it was a place I looked forward to coming to every day.

- Phil Wolfe, Philadelphia Summer Associate

The Philadelphia Summer Program includes first- and second-year law students and is the primary source for recruiting entry-level associates to our office. The majority of our business in the Philadelphia office is technical in nature, and we encourage interested law students with an undergraduate degree in a technical field (i.e. Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, etc.) OR a life science undergraduate degree as well as an MS or Ph.D. in the areas of Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, etc. to apply.

Participants in our unique program enjoy an experience that serves as an introduction to the excitement and intricacies of patent law. Our summer associates do real work for real clients, working closely with attorneys in all aspects of case management, such as drafting patent applications, assisting in patent litigation trial preparation, participating in interviews with inventors, and much more.

Throughout the summer, we offer legal training sessions and patent skills seminars, which provide summer associates excellent learning opportunities. The Philadelphia summer program ensures that summer associates experience a wide range of cultural and social activities the city has to offer. Some of the summer highlights include a Phillies baseball game, bowling night with the associates, a Segway tour of the city, lunch mixers, and an end-of-the-summer dinner with the partners.

The Philadelphia office plans to hire 2-3 summer associates including 1 first-year student. To apply, please email your cover letter, resume and law school transcript to
