Washington, D.C. Summer Program

"I was surprised how quickly partners and associates gave me opportunities to make substantial contributions to our clients’ cases. My very first assignment was a memo to one of the firm's biggest corporate clients. After one round of edits, my memo was shared directly with our client's general counsel. I also was brought in on two Supreme Court cases. One was a disability rights case, in which we wrote an amicus brief. I worked closely with two attorneys in developing our theory of the issue, considering justiciability problems, and working through drafts of the brief. The other Supreme Court matter concerned election law and I provided research to advance a procedural argument in a merits brief and to use in developing an amici strategy.

Away from the office, partners, associates and staff play in a summer softball league against other Washington, D.C., law firms. Those games were a great, relaxed venue to get to know the attorneys and staff and learn more about life at the firm."

– Joshua Jowdy, 2016 Summer Associate, Georgetown University Law Center

BakerHostetler's Washington, D.C., office offers a dynamic summer associate program. Lawyers from the office actively participate in the firm's on-campus interview program and meet with students at more than nine top-tier schools. Summer associates are selected based on their academic achievements, activities and area(s) of interest. Typically, three to four summer associates are selected from on-campus and call-back interviews.

The program commences in May and runs through the first week in August. All Washington summer associates are assigned to particular practice areas, including Litigation, International Trade and Government Policy, and participate in projects similar to those assigned to full-time associates.

We make a real effort to ensure that our summer associates have “real world” assignments in their particular area of interest. In addition, in order to provide a more rounded experience, most summer associates also participate in one or two projects from a specialty area outside their assigned area. Our lawyers are very active in federal and state courts in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Summer associates are encouraged to attend depositions, hearings and trials with lawyers practicing in these jurisdictions. We also have a vibrant legislative practice, and summer associates frequently monitor or attend congressional hearings.

We are fortunate to have numerous cultural and social activities readily available in the Washington metropolitan area. In the past, summer associates have competed in a "BBQ Battle" on the National Mall, attended a National Press Club Luncheon with General Counsel Ron Weisberg, toured the U.S. Capital with Mike Ferguson, visited the Spy Museum, enjoyed our national pastime at a Washington Nationals baseball game, attended the U.S. Open Championship at the Congressional Country Club and acquired their "sea legs" during a sailing trip on a schooner.

Partners and associates in the Washington office actively participate in the summer events and enjoy lunches and dinners with the summer associates. Office Managing Partner Jeffrey Paravano and Office Hiring Partner Janis Penman host dinners in their home for the summer associates. Summer associates also have planned lunches with partners to discuss in detail their area of practice and to receive valuable insight from them on their years of experience.

At BakerHostetler, our well-rounded summer program is designed to provide students with the training, experience and confidence necessary to begin the journey to become great lawyers who will enjoy their colleagues and their work.
